CPWF Mekong aims to help make hydropower better |
|
The Challenge Program on Water and Food (CPWF) works with governments, research institutions, development agencies and other partners in the Mekong to improve the way hydropower is designed, managed and operated so as to mitigate negative social and environmental impacts, benefit Mekong countries and to increase the number of uses to which hydropower and dam reservoirs are put.
CPWF Mekong is based in Vientiane, Lao PDR.
Background
The Mekong region encompasses Cambodia, China, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam. The single largest intervention to affect water use, management and productivity in the Mekong region today is the development of the rivers for hydropower.
Hydropower is vital for the economies and development potential of the countries in the region.
The quality of future hydropower development and its governance will have major short and long term impacts on the lives of around 300 million people who live in the Mekong region. The use of the region’s rivers for water for household, farming and industrial use, and as valuable sources of food, is vital for the people living here.
